Alan Alda Split Brain Video

This is a really interesting video showing how a man functions in life with a split brain.  His left and right hemispheres of his brain do not communicate with each other because he underwent a surgery to minimize seizures.

I love a broadway play called Hamilton:
An American Musical. It is about the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of America. It is a very interesting play for so many different reasons. There are many different races of actors, some of the historical characters and actors are LGBTQ+ , and it's a whole new kind of music brought to the stage in New York City. Just let me tell you, it can be rare to get an amazing job on broadway as a gay person of color. Broadway is also known for being mostly white actors. Let me tell you a little more about this “revolutionary” play.
This play teaches you a ton about history and Alexander Hamilton’s life. It is much more in depth about him than any class you take in school would be. It talks about when he was born in the Caribbean to when he dies is Weehawken, New Jersey. It also talk about other characters that are very important to American history like Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, George Washington, Hercules Mulligan and many more people that are so important to American history. It is so amazing that you can learn so much through music and a play on broadway.
Also, something so revolutionizing about the play is this the people. There are not very many opportunities for people of color, hispanics, and for LGBTQ+ people. Something so different also is the music. It's not your classical music that you would expect from a broadway show. It is rapping. It's so awesome that this show has bought opportunities to people with a play this different. They are all so talented to its amazing! They will blow you off your feet and leave you crying at the end of the show! The funny thing is that some people in the show didn't even dream of being on broadway, but loved to perform, mostly rap songs. One song in Hamilton set a record for the fastest rap on broadway. There is also so many people in the fandom that use this play as inspiration to them because they are a person of color or LGBTQ+ and it shows how one play can make such a difference in someone's life.
Hamilton is such a different and revolutionary play. It is not like anything else that has ever been on broadway before. The different style of music, different ways of dancing, and people change the way people think when they hear the words “Broadway play.” Thanks to this amazing play that won 11 Tony's and 1 Grammy, they have changed Broadway forever.

  3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfjN15zsPyQ Introverts and Extroverts
I think this topic is very interesting and it sparks my attention. I think of it as Bookworm or Party Animals. Which are you? I personally feel like more introverted, as I like sitting in the back of rooms and not talking unless it is a small group and the thing I am talking about is something I really like. I know many Party Animals, even in our very own Gifted and Talented Class… You know who you are… It is very crazy fact that the introverted brain has a bigger prefrontal cortex and need way less stimulation to get to the happiness level they enjoy and desire.
Being introverted is not bad per say, but you do miss out on some opportunities, like a party, and say you didn’t go, but you could’ve had the best night of your life. Same with being extroverted. If you go to the party and don’t finish doing homework or other, you might get in very big trouble. Not saying that either of them is bad, but people need to stop labeling one or another as “the right thing” or “the wrong thing” to be. I just don’t understand. Let people be who they are!
Going back to the prefrontal cortex and you see the part that is enlarged is the part involved with Deep thoughts and planning. The sad part is, I’m not good at planning! Introversion and extroversion go back in the old days too. Not like horse carriage days. I’m talking cavemen. The introverts would be better in a situation where they have to hide from predators, and extroverts would be better to roam when food or resources were scarce. It’s not only A or B. There is a category C that you might fall into.
You might be an ambivert. An ambivert is someone with both traits of introverts and extroverts. That is another thing that confuses me. How can you have traits of both categories? But other that confusion, I feel fascination when talking about this subject. We have all talked about this subject in Ms. Reckhow’s classroom, s we watched a TED Talk about an introvert and how being an introvert isn’t bad. Neither is being an extrovert. Another fun fact: Extroverts react strongly to a photo showing human faces, way stronger than introverts. They both reacted the same to a photo of nature.. I would guess an ambivert would be neutral either way. I wonder how the brain does that. I wonder how the brain makes these personalities for us to call our own.
How is a personality is formed? That is a very good question that may have already have a formed answer, but that will never stop me from wondering. Curiosity can never be drowned out. Are you curious to know who came up with this whole Introversion and extroversion thing? Carl Jung. Then Hans Eysenck. What should we to for the new month coming up? December should be about a public debate that drives you crazy. I am ready with my debate. But first, we have to get through November 8th!

  4. http://www.timeforkids.com/news/how-much-does-halloween-cost/475721 This article is about how much americans spend on halloween each year. It's amazing how much people spend. I think that there should be a budget for how much americans spend on halloween. The article states that people are expected to spend $8.4 billion on halloween candy, costumes, and decorations.

Why do they expect people to spend a certain amount of money? Well maybe there was a pattern but that could change we could spend more or we could spend less. From last year the amount spent is up 22%. That is an insane amount of money since last year was $6.9 billion. Why do people spend so much money? The article states that 6,791 that took part in a survey only 71% plans on handing out candy. Why spend money on candy that you are just going to eat yourself and get fatter. I mean i'm fine with you doing that but why would you do that to yourself.

At least when kids go trick or treating the earn it. They have to walk around and knock on doors to get candy. Adults just drive to the store buy candy and sit on their couch and eat it. Ok back to the topic. I chose this topic because i think it's fascinating how much people care about halloween and how much they spend. Its really cool how much people care and that they spend on candy and costumes for their children and themselves. Also how much they spend on the scary and cute decorations. They really care about what people and children think. That is just my opinion you could have a completely different idea. Well what i alo think is that people think that what candy they give out defines who they are.

    1. I agree with you completely. It also intrigued and fascinated me how they numbers are expected to rise over the years. 22%?!? 1 Year?!? And I know what you mean when you say their predictions might not be very accurate and how we the people choose and make the decisions that affect our money spent on Halloween. Also, this is my opinion, but I think adults have the right to do whatever they want to. I understand your point that they might just sit on the couch.

    2. It is a crazy subject, that is for sure and I agree with your views. I cannot believe that Halloween is such a expensive holiday! For you to spend almost 1/5 money more is insane! In one year you are spending so much more money that can be used for better things. If you are not going to hand out candy, why are you buying it??? All you are going to do is sit and eat candy on the sofa when a bunch of small kids are going around in the cold for candy. It is crazy that this one holiday that you dress up in costume and go trick or treating, makes Americans spend so much money!

  5. People underestimate the power of gaming and immediately categorize it as a bad thing. But in this Ted Talk, Tom Chatfield talks about video games and 7 ways it engages the brain. He talks about how video games are made to please our brains. He states that the delight to do something in a game + the ambition to do something extraordinary ( like riding on a dragon) = encouragement to keep playing this video game. Or in this case, riding a dragon.
His first idea about our video games encourage the brain is the experience bar that tracks an in game level. It teaches the brain to ahead for long term goals. Like reaching to level 50 or something like that. His second idea is multiple long and short term aims. For example, one quest is to collect 15 pies, and one quest is to collect 1,000.
The short term aim is aiming for those 15 pies. The long term aim is getting those 1,000 pies. Or choosing to get 15 pumpkins. The player can choose between his aims and that teaches the brain to pick and choose which beneficial activities the player can strategically use. Third, You get rewards for doing something. You do a little, you get rewarded a little in-game currency/ items. This is the best that video games can do for the player. And the easiest to get across.
Fourth, clear feedback. Feedback is another good example of rewarding the player. It can sometimes be hard to understand the effects of human society, but an accurate representation of what is going on is very valuable to the player and the storyline happening in-game. Fifth, the element of uncertainty. It's good if you know what reward you are getting. Like you know there is a special item is this box. But what if you didn't know it was there, and it can only appear if you get a certain score. Sixth, it enhances our sensory organs in a way. Like our memory and stuff like that. Finally, Other people. Our brain improves, socially and mentally by being surrounded by our peers. We work together to solve problems and make strategies.
Overall, I think video games are good for our health! I don't think they should classified the way they are and society really needs to calm down and do some thinking.
    What are your thoughts?

    2. I think that video games are very special and they are being labeled very badly for the right reasons. Video games are meant to make boredom vanish, yet the new generations are overusing this new toy. They might just be using it because the true reality isn’t exciting enough. I did a little bit of research and would like to add a link, if you don’t mind. It’s another ASAP science video, but I don’t think anyone would mind. It is about how Video games affect the brain and what parts of the brain improve.

    3. Video games are not always accepted by society and sometimes are viewed as a waste of time. I agree with those statements and here is why. They are used a reality escape because the world they live in just is not as cool as flying on a dragon. You should learn to accept reality and learn to entertain yourself with stuff that is actually beneficial. You bring up the point that you communicate with your peers but then you become so emerged in the game you start to block out friends and family in real life. You may look forward to talking to your friend on the game but then soon realize your school had a football game and you missed everything that was the talk of the school for the next couple of days. Some times the negatives out way the positives in something. With video games I think that is the case.
