Blog #5 Test grade due 1/31/17

Neil Gaiman, the author of Coraline and The Graveyard Book , as well as many other books, wrote:

May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.

...I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.

And for this year, my wish for each of us is small and very simple.

And it's this.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.

So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.

Please REACT to this quote at length, in your BLOG post this month!

  1. This quote is really inspirational in ways that I never thought of. The writer is trying to get across a point that you should overcome all fears and live life to the fullest. Like falling in love and making art. Writing and drawing and singing and building and living in general. He said in his second paragraph, “..I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.” I think he is trying to say that you need to make an impact on society by making something that didn't exist before you made it. And he is saying that you should fall in love and have people love you in return. Plus the fact to be kind and wise. He says that being kind and wise is something we need in the world right now. Then he makes a wish, wishing something very small and very simple. And that is to make mistakes. The writer says that making mistakes is a back door to trying new things. Or challenging yourself with something you now you can't do. So try that harder math problem for homework. Make mistakes! He quote, “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.” So as long as you are doing something, mistakes or not, you are fulfilling life in your own special way. IT may be changing the world or just changing the the last problem on your math test because you know its wrong. But, if you know its wrong, then you are making a mistake, exactly what the writer said to do, this year, and forever. And finally in his last paragraph,”So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make you mistakes, next year and forever.” What I can get from this is that he is furthering his point on making mistakes. Like making new mistakes and mistakes nobody's ever made before. And don't worry if it isn't perfect and a lot of other things repeated from last time.

This quote really inspires me to do my best and don't sweat ti if in isn't perfect. This really means a lot, especially coming from a writer. He probably thought of this while he was messing up something with Coraline.(even though Coraline was amazing) So that is what I can make out from this quote. What did you think?

  2. The quote made me feel like if you make a mess up, it really is not the end of the world. When you make a mistake you know it is a mistake and acknowledge it. You are able to learn from it and you will not make the same mistake again. He hopes that you will be bold and not step back from what you want to do and just go ahead and do it. He wants for there to be a clean sheet at the beginning and by December it be filled with colorful paint splashes. The author wants there to be peace and creativity in the world and not hatred and darkness. What he says when he wants you to make mistakes he means that if you mess something up, you will find new things out, make different things that you haven’t before, you are challenging yourself to achieve new goals and you will learn what it takes to get there. He also mentions that when you make a mistake you should not quit and turn around but try to fix it and keep going. He does not believe a mistake will ruin everything. It says to me your fears and mistakes are good and what help you being you and know what you want to do. He says get over your fears because they just hold you back from doing what you want to do.,

  3. This really unique quote really made me think. It's really special and makes me gain confidence and feel really good. The first time I read "I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes", I was really confused. The first reaction I have when someone tells me to make mistakes is WHY? Mistakes help you learn , but why not learn from another's mistake? As an artist, if I'm drawing or painting, I look at other art pieces to see what "mistakes" they made. I know there are no mistakes in art, but I believe even the best artists make anatomy mistakes.
I think this quote is so inspiring and beautiful because it's so powerful and confident. It tells you to be yourself, not to be one of though the fake copies you probably see daily. You have to make mistakes to learn, and to grow as a person. Never be afraid to be different, to be unique, to be you. No matter who you are, you are special, and a mistake can never change that. Even if you mess up your words, forget to turn in an assignment, or just fail a test, are you the same person? YES! This quote is saying to never forget that you are here to live and make mistakes, not to be a perfect person and just "be". The fake copies are just scared to be the real version of them, they are scared nobody would like them, that they would be laughed at or made fun of. I understand what they are feeling, because some of the people I know are copies. They talk to me about their feelings and the real them shines through to me. Honestly, it's really sad to know they can't understand that everybody is unique, and that we need to embrace our mistakes.Be you and be happy. Make mistakes and learn.
    Extra Random Rant:
THIS IS A RANDOM RANT ABOUT ART. IF YOU ARE OT INTERESTED IN ART OR MY RANDOM RANTS, PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME READING THIS. THANK YOU -KIM
Well, as you may know, I'm an artist.. Being an artist is very hard and I think the art community deserves more respect. When a little child comes to you with a picture, ask good questions that will make him/her think you love it. Make the child happy and inspired to continue. Don't push them to the side and say, "It's lovely." We all know what you really mean. (COUGH COUGH PARENTS) We need to stop killing creativity.
Children these days just give up when things don't go their way. I see it first hand. Us G and T students are very gifted in the sense that we don't give up, even if we don't get something done right the first try. Now, think of yourself as a child, and you drew a picture for your mother. She is doing the dishes and doesn't even look over at you. She continues washing the dishes and says,"Wow, it's great. Now go and keep drawing." What would you do? How would you feel? It's very diminishing to hear those words said in a sarcastic tone. Now you know how I feel… Go share your opinion!

  4. Life is for making mistakes. That’s how you learn and how you live. You should do whatever you want to do in life and dance like nobody’s watching because you need to make the most of your life, and cherish it. That is what I feel the quote I read by Neil Gaiman is teaching. I think this quote is both brilliant and beautiful because I think people these days are always living up to expectations and standards instead of living for themselves or their passions. Unfortunately, you don’t know when your last day will be, and because of that we have to make every moment worth it. I don’t mean by doing something extravagant every day. That isn’t realistic. What I mean is that you want to avoid regret, but making mistakes is okay. I think that a good way to make every moment worth it is by making the little things count. I think the little things are more meaningful in a way. The amazing thing about mistakes is that you’re learning. Some might think of mistakes as messing up or doing something wrong. I ,and many others, look at it as learning because without doing something wrong, you’ll never know what not to do.
Making a mistake only benefits you because you are trying something new that someone might not have ever done. Therefore, you are learning, possibly making history, and someone else can learn by watching or hearing about your mistake. Mistakes are small miracles that happen in your everyday life. They can save you from something big happening that you might regret in the long run. I believe that humans were created imperfect because we wouldn’t be able to learn from mistakes if we were perfect. I also think that this is the reasoning behind history. We document history to learn from. We all know that not every thing in history was a good decision. Yet, we still learn about these mishaps so we don’t repeat them. One good mistake to make might be trying a food. If you don’t like it, it was a mistake that you learn from because you won’t eat that food again. Yet if you did like it, then you now know because you tried something new. I, for one, am a picky eater, so this one doesn’t always apply to me, but it can for others.
As we go through the amazing journey we refer to as life, we have moments where we are shy, and moments where we break out of our shell. Some are afraid to admit that they have moments when they do something wrong, make a mistake. Yet, they are very proud to let others know that they did something right. If only they knew that making a mistake, was doing something right! WE all want our lives to seem perfect like we see on “reality” tv shows. In reality, thought, we aren’t perfect and we don’t live a perfect life. That’s great! If we lived a perfect life, we wouldn’t be making the most of our lives because there would be one fear. Mistake. That is what would hold us back if we had a perfect life. That is why I think Neil Gaiman, and I, think from this point on, we should set aside perfection and make a mistake!

  5. This quote is very inspiring in ways for me that you can’t imagine. I could just ponder over it for hours, apply it to my life and think of situations where I could have thought of this quote and made things better for me and the people around me. Everyone makes mistakes and though we try not to the only perfect person Jesus Christ himself. This poem tells the people reading it what the reality of life is and that there is no avoiding it. I feel everyone in the school should read this poem and it could really help many people’s lives. When people make mistakes they try to hide them but really they should be celebrating them. By making mistakes you are showing that you are learning and growing. By celebrating mistakes you are showing yourself and people around you that you are happy and OK with growing up and learning more each day. Our world would be a much happier and safer place to live if we embraced our mistakes over hiding them. Challenge yourself to do harder things like trying out for G+T or the extra credit on the test that your teacher did not teach you about make mistakes on it and then show her, correct your mistakes and now you know how to do that type of problem.
Neil Gaiman also talks about how the world needs more wisdom and kindness. How you should read books and create things that have never been created before, dream dangerously and outrageously, that you should be loved and that you should be liked and that you will have people to love and to like in return. Many people also need to work on these traits as well as the ones in the paragraph above. Wisdom if we don’t have it then there would be a lot of people who don’t have common sense. We need common sense because if we did not have it people would have a lot of people doing a lot of dumb things and things that are just no-brainers. Dream dangerously, dream big, dream courageously, dream like the sky's the limit, Dream like nobody's watching. Be loved, liked and show love and like, know what it feels like to be loved and liked and know what it feels like to love and like as they are two totally different feelings.
This poem changed me! Tomorrow there will be a changed Kacie. When I walk into school tomorrow you might not notice or realize it but I will be changed forever. Maybe not on the outside but on the inside, IN MY HEART. I am going to try and make this poem my Philosophy of life, and slowly infuse it into every aspect of my life one hundred percent by thinking before I speak, start listening more to the world around me, and remembering that mistakes make not only me better but all the others around me as well. Live life to the fullest and don't let anyone or anything control your life.

  6. First of all this quote is very cool because it is kind of saying what they said like 5years ago. I thought that this quote had a great meaning of that they are encouraging to try new things and to be creative and read a lot. They are also encouraging to dream big and bold. They are also they say that you will have expectations and you will pass them this year. They encourage you to be wise, kind, and you will always be these things. His wish is small but very powerful to the world. People make mistakes and that is okay it is a part of life and a way to learn. He encourages to make mistakes and to learn from those mistakes. He tells you to do what you're scared of doing and to do it well. He tells you to make mistakes now and forever. He says that you will be loved forever and will be liked. But you have to go through people who don't like you to get to the one that truly loves you. It also says that you will create something that didn't exist because you made it. This poem was truly inspiring it told me to follow my dreams and to not care what people say because one day i wll find a person who truly loves me. It also encourages to make mistakes no one has before. He said this was also his wish for himself not just for everyone else. He thinks that we need more love and wisdom in the world and i agree with him. This world needs more wisdom definitely in this world and love. He also says may your year be filled with magic and madness. I definitely know the madness part.
This is now the time where i go into talking about stuff that no one cares about. So does anyone have tips for getting your parents to buy me a puppy. Kara,Kim, and i think Jonathan your useless but Kacie and Jessica how. I know i got colt but i was 6 i forget the tactics. Okay time to ramble on about dogs. Schipperkes and golden retrievers are my top choice of dogs. Schipperkes are the cutest things ever they are like baby black german shepherds. Okay now we talk about school. My favorite class is G and T or language arts. I really like G and T because it's a really fun class and all my friends are in it. I also really love doing the glogs. I only need like 80 words now so let's ramble. I really don't want to switch to history i really like science and its so sad. Ugh i am so bad at writing these or anything at all for a fact. I have a weird tactic to falling asleep. I put on netflix and fall asleep to the show. I know my dad gets mad because he thinks i'm awake. Well 4 words left.
